A Maiden a Day: Day 6

Back to it after giving my wife a much deserved break from all this Iron Maiden-ness. I stopped and waited a couple days into the future so I could travel back to a couple days ago and listen to “Somewhere in Time”.

This sixth studio album has a couple notable thingies. One, guitar synthesizers. Hey, I didn’t say that they were notable because they were awesome. Two, the album contains no songs written by Bruce Dickinson. I guess he wrote a bunch of acoustic songs and cuddled up with a bunch of bunnies and kitties and the rest of the band was like “Uh-uh Bruce.”. The band rejected all of his songs for this record. I understand though, how the hell you gonna write a bunch of acoustic songs when we have GUITAR SYNTHESIZERS, Bruce?? Get with the program!
This was also the first release that didn’t come out a year after it’s predecessor. The band wanted to take their time and not rush to get it ready like they had in the past.

I’m gonna be honest here, I’ve always thought the art work related to this record was some of my favorite. Also, it’s kinda bat shit crazy. In the future, skinless cyborg Eddie roams the streets of some Blade Runner type city. Packing future type ray guns and wearing fedoras and smoking and just being all super futurey. I remember that there were tons of references to old Maiden albums in the cover art, but today I found this list. This crazy fucking list:

The street sign on the corner where Eddie is standing says Acacia (partially obscured), a reference to the song “22 Acacia Avenue” from The Number of the Beast album.[28][29]
Below “Acacia” is a poster of Eddie from the first album, with graffiti reading “Eddie lives” written on it.[29] Torn posters are also featured on the “Sanctuary” and “Women in Uniform” singles.
A banner with the words, “This is a very boring painting” is displayed backwards within the lobby of the Bradbury Towers Hotels International. This can be seen to the left of Eddie’s right leg.[28]
In the very centre, just above the “Department” sign and behind the cable going to the cyborg’s weapon, there is a small vertical phrase in red neon, which reads “Меня Рвёт” [Menya Rvyot], Russian for “I’m vomiting” — or more literally, “it’s tearing me up”, depending on the context.
An Eye of Horus neon sign at the top of a building, a reference to the song, “Powerslave”.[30]
Under Eddie’s left leg there is a rubbish bin attached to a lamppost, identical to the one seen on the cover of the “Iron Maiden” album.[29]
The haloed black cat from the back cover of Live After Death is on the pavement behind Eddie.[30]
Below the Eye of Horus is the name, “Websters,” a tribute to Charlie Webster, EMI’s art director.[29]
Derek Riggs’ artistic signature symbol can be found on Eddie’s chest.

References on the back include:

A clock reading 23:58 (“2 Minutes to Midnight”).[28]
Below the clock there is a sign which reads “Phantom Opera House,” in reference to the song “Phantom of the Opera” from the first album.[29]
The words “Bollocks again & again” appear just below the “Phantom Opera House”.
A building on the left side carries the sign, “Aces High Bar,” a reference to the song (“Aces High”) of the same name.[28]
Flying over the “Aces High Bar” is a Spitfire from the “Aces High” cover.[30]
To the left of the “Aces High Bar” are four letters in yellow and green. These are Hebrew letters spelling out the name of God, namely יהוה, Jehovah/Yahweh.[29]
Below the “Aces High Bar”, is a sign that says “Sand Dune” in reference to their song “To Tame a Land,” from Piece of Mind, based on the novel Dune.
Pyramids in the background, a reference to the Powerslave album.[30]
Among the pyramids, a grim reaper, similar to that which appears on the covers of “The Trooper” and Live After Death.[30]
The marquee for the cinema reads Blade Runner, the film which inspired the album’s cover.[27] It also reads “Live After Death”, the name of their 1985 live album.[28][29]
The cinema is named “Philip K. Dick Cinema”, named after the author of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the book on which the film Blade Runner was based.[30]
More Blade Runner references include “Dekkers Department Stores” and a “Tyrell Corp” sign.[30]
In the background, “Bradbury Towers” can be seen, a likely reference to the Blade Runner prominent Bradbury Building located in Los Angeles.[29]
To the right of the clock is a neon sign which reads “Ancient Mariner Seafood Restaurant”, a reference to the song “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” from the Powerslave album.
On the bottom left hand side of the cover is “The Ruskin Arms”, famous for being one of the first venues which Iron Maiden performed in.[28][29]
On the second floor of the “Ruskin Arms” building is a woman sitting in a red lit room which, a reference to “Charlotte”, a repeated character in the band’s songs.[31]
Just above “The Ruskin Arms” is a neon sign that reads “RAINBOW”, another famous venue where Iron Maiden recorded a video in 1980.
Above and to the left of the “Rainbow” sign is a neon sign reading “L’AMOURS Beer Gardens”, a reference to the “L’Amours” rock venue Iron Maiden once played in Brooklyn, New York.[29]
On the roof of the same building is the TARDIS from the BBC TV series Doctor Who.[29] The TARDIS is also featured on the cover of the “Wasted Years” single.
Above the Bradbury Towers neon sign is Icarus in flames falling from the sky, in the same style of the cover for the band’s 1983 single “Flight of Icarus”.[28][29] According to Riggs, Icarus is supposed to look like the logo used by Swan Song Records, a label founded by Led Zeppelin.[32]
On the walkway above the clock is an electronic sign that says “LATEST RESULTS…….WEST HAM 7……..ARSENAL 3”, a nod to bass guitarist Steve Harris who is a West Ham supporter.[29]
At the right edge below, just near the band, there is another sign in Russian – Кефир (“KEFIR”), which means “yoghurt”.[29]
Just above the “KEFIR” sign is a street sign reading “Upton Park,” which is where West Ham’s football stadium is located.
There is a sign which reads “Tonight: Gypsy’s Kiss”, a reference to the first band Steve Harris ever played in.[30]
On the right side, above the “Bradbury Towers” sign, is a sign in Japanese, “浅田 彰,” which refers to a notable Japanese philosopher, economist and critic, Akira Asada.
To the right of the pyramids is a sign reading “Long Beach Arena,” which is where most of the Live After Death album was recorded.[28]
The Syncom sign refers to the 1961 NASA program of the same name.
The neon sign above the band reads “Maggies Revenge” and refers to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who appears on the cover of the “Sanctuary” and “Women in Uniform” singles.
One of the buildings is labelled “Asimov Foundation”, a reference to the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov.[30]
A character wearing a large cloak stands above the walkway’s right side, which Riggs claims is Batman.[31]
Above and slightly to the right of the cloaked character reads more Hebrew lettering, “ג’ין” (Gin, in English).
On the right side of the walkway and just above the “Latest Results” sign is the bracket that holds Eddie’s skull together from the Piece of Mind album onwards, which Riggs drew as a cartouche.[31]
In the bottom right hand corner all five members of the band are standing in a line. Bruce Dickinson is holding a brain, a reference to Piece of Mind, and Nicko is wearing aviator goggles (he had a pilot’s license by this time, long before Dickinson) and a t-shirt that says “Iron What?”. According to Riggs, the band complained because the pictures of themselves were not accurate enough.[30]
To the right of “Long Beach Arena” is a sign which reads “Hammerjacks”, a night club and concert hall in Baltimore frequented by the band.[29]
Below Hammerjacks is a sign that says “Tehe’s Bar”, which is where the choir vocals in the middle of “Heaven Can Wait” were recorded.[30]
To the left of the clock is a sign that says “Herbert Ails”, a reference to the author Frank Herbert who wrote the book, “Dune,” which the Iron Maiden song, “To Tame a Land,” is based on. Herbert had also died that same year, explaining the word “Ails.”[29]
Beneath the Phantom Opera House sign, there is a sign that reads “EMI REC.”. All of the band’s albums, outside North America, have been released by EMI Records.

Got that from wiki again, deal with it.

A Maiden A Day: Day 5

Little known fact: When our daughter was born I wanted to name her “Powerslave”. My wife wouldn’t let me. While that actually isn’t “fact” it doesn’t mean that someone out there hasn’t perhaps done it or tried.
Yes, it is day 5 and I’m listening to studio album number 5, “Powerslave”. I have to make this one short so I can get back to drawing comics.

“Powerslave” is probably the album (or tour, rather) that saw the band make the quickest rise to popularity. The tour it’s self was one of their longest to date. It included a huge stage set reflecting the Egyptian theme of the album.

There was a lot of artwork released for this album I believe, I remember seeing 3 or 4 different tour shirts and then there was the artwork done for the singles “Aces High” and “2 Minutes to Midnight”.
The album cover featured a scene of a pyramid with Eddie as a pharaoh type feller. This Eddie is basically a statue so while he still looks like Eddie from the last album there isn’t a lot to report. One thing to note though is his Head bracket is very much still in place.

This album has “Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner” as the closing track. It is an awesome song but, it’s an awesome 14 minute song. As mentioned before, it also includes the opening track “Aces High”, which is another pretty well known song. Oh, one thing to note, the 1998 reissue of this has a slightly shorter version of the title track. They just moved the intro to the end of “Back in the Village”. So now that song is longer. Why did they do this you ask? Because they’re Iron Maiden. What the fuck are you gonna do about it?

Let’s do ACES HIGH

and

POWERSLAVE

Track Listing:

1.”Aces High”
2.”2 Minutes to Midnight”
3.”Losfer Words (Big ‘Orra)”
4.”Flash of the Blade”
5.”The Duellists”
6.”Back in the Village”
7.”Powerslave”
8.”Rime of the Ancient Mariner”

I think one of the first Iron Maiden t-shirts I ever had was from this album. Eddie as a mummy bitting through his chains. Yes, biting through his chains is pretty damn bad ass, but wait! Theres more! He also has LIGHTNING COMING OUT OF HIS EYES AND SHIT!
So todays Eddie sketch is a sloppy tribute to the long lost shirt (that I totally wish I still had now):

A Maiden a Day: Day 4

Yes! Day four is most certainly “Piece of Mind” day! I haven’t listened to the full album in I don’t know how long. I was a little worried seeing as how yesterday was “Number of the Beast” day. I mean, I really like the record, you know.
Turns out I still really enjoy “Piece of Mind”. A couple of the songs absolutely get a little corny but, c’mon, we are talking about Iron Maiden, right?

I’m not aware of a ton of fun facts involved with this one. Admittedly I am using a variety of sources to help me write these Iron Maiden posts and not everything is just me being a brilliant fucking human being that remembers every single thing he ever read or heard. We can go ahead and just say I am though.
One rather awesome tidbit I guess I was unaware of before today involves the song “Still Life”. I remembered that it begins with a section of audio that is a voice being played backwards. You have to love it, it was totally a joke just to fuck with religious people who accused Iron Maiden of being satanists (see yesterdays post for a word for word quote on how they perceived the band).
Turns out it the voice is that of Nicko McBrain, who also made his debut as the bands new, and permanent to this day drummer. Here is the explanation of this “hidden message” I’m stealing from the albums wiki
page:

“At the beginning of the sixth track, “Still Life”, the band included a hidden message which could only be understood by playing the album backwards. This was a joke and an intended swing back at the critics who had accused Iron Maiden of being Satanic. The backwards-message features Nicko McBrain mimicking Idi Amin (or rather mimicking John Bird mimicking Idi Amin) uttering the following phrase “What ho said the t’ing with the three ‘bonce’, do not meddle with things you don’t understand…”, followed by a belch. The phrase itself is taken from the satirical album The Collected Broadcasts of Idi Amin by Bird and Alan Coren. “What ho” and “What ho said the t’ing” are phrases that also crop up regularly on McBrain’s “Listen With Nicko!” tracks from The First Ten Years collection.
According to McBrain, “We were sick and tired of being labelled as Devil worshippers and all this bollocks by these fucking morons in the States, so we thought, ‘Right, you want to take the piss? We’ll show you how to take the bleeding piss, my son!’ And one of the boys taped me in the middle of this Idi Amin routine I used to do when I’d had a few drinks. I remember it distinctly ended with the words, ‘Don’t meddle wid t’ings yo don’t understand.’ We thought, if people were going to be stupid about this sort of thing, we might as well give them something to be really stupid about, you know?”

I would venture to say that one of the best known songs from this record is “the Trooper”. Which, yes, is a great song.
A lot of the songs on this album are very keen on telling stories. The band drew on a lot of literary influence, which I think they continued on. The song “Revelations” even draws from British Occultist, Aleister Crowley.

The album art features Eddie even more evolved into the way we know him. Gone is the Glam Rock hair do (see ya!!) and sporting a fresh new skull cap scar and his soon to be well known forehead bracket. That’s not to say that the hair never makes another appearance, stay tuned.
Eddie is featured in a straight jacket chained, in a padded cell, because he is a fucking super monster that can effect super feats just after having his head cut open and screwed closed again. There is a door opened into a cloudy expanse (on the expanded gate fold) one can only assume is meant to be the “Mind” in “Piece of Mind”, that or a 1930’s smoke room.

I think I’ll share, let’s see… STILL LIFE Because it’s a cool song.
Also because they mention dinosaurs…. QUEST FOR FIRE

Track Listing:
1.”Where Eagles Dare”
2.”Revelations”
3.”Flight of Icarus”
4.”Die with Your Boots On”
5.”The Trooper”
6.”Still Life”
7.”Quest for Fire”
8.”Sun and Steel”
9.”To Tame a Land”

Your Eddie sketch for today was a quick one, it’s been a busy day:

Well, now to get back to roughing out some THE CABINET pages. Oh, yeah, I’m doing that this week and am starting on pages next week. Exciting.

See you tomorrow for “PowerSlave”!

A Maiden a Day: Day 3

Happy Halloween! What better way to celebrate than with Bruce Dickinsons first album as vocalist for Iron Maiden, “Number of the Beast”!! It’s playing right now, and I must say, this really is one of my absolute favorite records. I’ve been looking forward to it all week!
So, yesterday we waved bye bye to Paul Di’Anno, thank goodness. I don’t know if I could have taken another album with him.

Where do I start? “Number of the Beast” was a huge deal for the band. The songs are way more complex. I’ve read that Steve Harris had an opportunity to expand and try a different approach to writing the songs due to the inclusion of Dickinson. Producer Martin Birch said he didn’t think Di’Anno could swing with some of the newer things Harris wanted to try. I am inclined to agree with him.
It’s been said Bruce Dickinson had a hand in writing on some of the songs but because of contract issues with his previous band, Samson, he couldn’t take a song writing credit.

There was lot’s of talk of weird shit happening during the recording too I guess. Lights turning on and off and blah to the blah. The best in my opinion though is the story about (producer) Martin Birch getting in a car accident with a bus full of nuns and ending up with a repair bill for 666 pounds. Classic.
This kinda of thing only helped make religious groups (mainly in America, figures.) even more sure that Iron Maiden, were in FACT, dirty heathen satanists who wanted to eat babies while riding naked on goats down streets filled with virgin blood. Really. I am going to say that’s exactly what they said.

The art didn’t help these would be satanists either. Depicting Eddie controlling the devil on strings, who in turn also had another smaller Eddie on strings. Another absolute favorite thing about this album for me. I even had a cheap skateboard with the image of half Satan half Eddie. Fuck… I’m starting to weird myself out now.

When it comes to songs, man, it’s hard. There are plenty of great ones on this record. Obviously, the title track a must! NUMBER OF THE BEAST
“Run to the Hills” as well. It was a hit single for them after all. This song is fucking amazing still! Best experienced with the video… RUN TO THE HILLS VIDEO (it’s especially awesome around the 3:66 mark)

Honestly though, you just can’t go wrong with this album. I could keep talking about it but I have other things to do. Drats.

Track Listing:
1.”Invaders”
2.”Children of the Damned”
3.”The Prisoner”
4.”22 Acacia Avenue”
5.”The Number of the Beast”
6.”Run to the Hills”
7.”Gangland”
8.”Hallowed Be Thy Name”

In todays Eddie sketch he is enjoying trick or treating with some friends:

A Maiden A Day: Day 2

Welcome to day 2 of an Iron Maiden album a day! Today I spend time with the second studio album, “Killers”. While working on some concept stuff for a new project called “Loyal”. I’ll get to that in a minute though, lets talk about Iron Maidens second full length album.

“Killers” was another Maiden album that I hadn’t heard before Number of the Beast, so, when I was 8 or 9 it was yet another that I went back and was a little “What the….”. Yep, this was the second (and last) album with Paul Di’Anno on vocals. Di’Anno was replaced by Bruce Dickinson after this due to living the holy rockstar life style of alcohol and cocaine and not being able to hold his shit together. His performances on stage suffered greatly and one might imagine he walked around with a big bucket of douche at that point. This all based on stuff I’ve read over the years, Paul may have been the victim of a conspiracy plotted by Harris, Dickinson and Freddy Mercury for all I know.

ANYWAY… “Killers” features, as most Iron Maiden records, the mascot, Eddie, on the cover. Not only does this see Eddie taking shape as he will come to be seen for years to come but, he moves away from the strung out Lita Ford look and moves to more of a Poison “Glam Rock” hair dood. (see Poison in coming years)
This is probably one of the more iconic Maiden covers. I don’t know for sure but, I’m pretty sure I have drawn that cover 666 (heh) times over my life time. One of the things that drew me to Iron Maiden was the artwork. I had a poster on my wall of the “Killers” album art long before I ever actually heard the record. I’ll talk a little more about the artist and the influence on me a little later, somewhere around Seventh Son I think.

To the music. So, listening to this album that was so iconic in it’s visual representation the first thing that comes to mind is… Good thing it was the last Paul Di’Anno record. I think you can tell the guy was either not into it or trying to reach for something a little out of his range. I don’t mind him on the self titled debut. The songs on this album are just a little lacking. Believe me, I don’t only blame him, some of the music is, well, a little cheesy. Like cheesy in a way that isn’t ok. As a matter of fact I’ve read that the only song from this record they actually play live anymore is “Wrathchild”.
Stand outs for me on this listen are songs like the title track “KILLERS” .
Wrathchild is a pretty solid song as well, here, let’s usher Di’Anno out with another live performance by him… WRATHCHILD

Track Listing:
1.”The Ides of March” (instrumental)
2.”Wrathchild”
3.”Murders in the Rue Morgue”
4.”Another Life”
5.”Genghis Khan” (instrumental)
6.”Innocent Exile”
7.”Killers”
8.”Prodigal Son”
9.”Purgatory”
10.”Drifter”

(note: I went back and added the track listing to yesterdays as well)

Tomorrow shit gets fucking sweet. We welcome Bruce Dickinson with “Number of the Beast”, on Halloween no less! (I swear I didn’t even think about that until today.)
Here is todays Eddie sketch (I guess I’ve drawn this cover 667 times now…

While listening today I’ve been working out a few character designs for a project I’m working on with writer Fabian Rangel Jr. I thought I would share a couple concepts with yous…

I’ll talk more about this project soon. I’m excited to work with Fabian on this, he came to me with a great concept! It’s an honor even!

A Maiden A Day: Day 1

I don’t remember how old I was the first time I heard Iron Maiden. I was pretty young though. I know they weren’t the first heavy metal band I ever heard, not even the first one I liked. They have always somehow been a constant in my life though some how. I never stopped liking them even when I kinda stopped listening to metal for awhile. I still own CD’s and stuff and put them on every now and again.
I did stop checking out newer material after awhile though. I think the last Iron Maiden record I bought was Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, on the day it came out actually, but more on that later.
I haven’t really tried anything beyond that. Unless I’ve heard something in passing and just forgot about it.

We were driving to take our daughter back to school and go to an art museum yesterday and I, for some reason, put on Number of the Beast (a favorite that is probably the one I still listen to the most) in the car and realized I was very much enjoying it. Then I started thinking about my younger years listening to them and realizing that I could associate them as much with growing up and some major events as I could Punk and Hardcore.

So I decided to go back and listen to every Iron Maiden album from the beginning, all the way up to the latest. I realize I might have to double up on a couple and perhaps skip a live one or two, it’s mainly to sit and think about each one again and also give the ones I never have a chance. Plus, it could be fun, even if I hate the stuff I haven’t heard.

So, first up Iron Maidens debut album “Iron Maiden”. This is actually the first thing I ever shop lifted. Not that I did a shit ton, in fact this was the only thing that wasn’t magazines or comics from a grocery store. Don’t judge me.
I pocketed this and a Sex Pistols cassette. I was already listening to Iron Maiden at this point but I had never heard the self titled album. So, you can imagine my surprise when 8 (I think) year old me put it excitedly into my cassette/record player combo and discovered that GASP Bruce Dickinson wasn’t on vocals! It was another guy by the name of Paul Di’Anno. Who wasn’t the very first Iron Maiden vocalist, but the first on full length records and the last before Dickinson who joined the band on Number of the Beast. Which I hadn’t heard anything before NotB at that point, so shock and disgust!! All of that AND the Eddie on the cover looked like some kind of strung out Lita Ford or some shit.
There were still songs that I liked. Some of it kind of has a Punk vibe to it. Regardless, I put it away in favor of it’s partner in my crime, the Sex Pistols.

So, here I am listening to it today and enjoying it a lot. I mean, it is what it is. You can hear a lot of the guitar solos and “riffs” you later recognize as that “Maiden sound” I guess. Hard to pick a song to share so I found a live video version of “Running Free” with Di’Anno. RUNNING FREE

Though I do think “Prowler” has always been a favorite from this album for me. PROWLER

The track listing:
1.”Prowler”
2.”Remember Tomorrow”
3.”Running Free”
4.”Phantom of the Opera”
5.”Transylvania” (instrumental)
6.”Strange World”
7.”Charlotte the Harlot”
8.”Iron Maiden”

So, I’m going to listen to an Iron Maiden album avery day until I’ve listened to at least every studio album. Doing this while working and I’ll also be updating everyone on a couple new projects as well as where we are on THE CABINET and HOBO KINGS.

Oh, and if time permits, a quick daily Eddie sketch as well:

Alphabooks: V is for Vernon Dursley

Here it is, my V entry just in time to be late with my W entry. Been a busy week and it looks like this coming week will be even more so. Gets hard to find time when you’re drawing 3 Original Graphic Novels and a slew of other short stories.

Anyways, here is this weeks post…

V is for Vernon Dursley:

I’ll be posting some updates on certain books soon, including THE CABINET. For now, enjoy!

CLUTCH

Over the past year or so I’ve been pretty fortunate to hook up with various creators and work on some great stuff or develop relationships for future projects. This has also led to me getting to do a few things outside my comfort zone.
A few months back I began talking with author C.E.L. Welsh about collaborating on a comic project. We’ve talked about a couple different cool things. For now Welsh is busy getting his book, CLUTCH Book One of the Wrecked Earth, ready for release in November.

Last week I got an email from Welsh about the cover for his book. Danny Cruz, who did the art for for the cover (The really really awesome art. check out his DeviantArt page, it’s pretty great! ) was unable to finish the coloring on the cover. So I came on as colorist for the front and back cover. It was a little intimidating but super fun and an honor to work on Danny’s art.

I give you the front cover of CLUTCH Book One of the Wrecked Earth:

I had been wanting to try my hand at coloring someone else’s art for awhile and got an awesome opportunity.

You can find out more about CLUTCH and find out when the book is released HERE

(On a side note, I did the color work in Manga Studio.)

Alphabbooks: U is for Dolores Umbridge!

Another last name. Getting into the tough letters and it’s possible there could be at least one non Harry Potter related character in my set before the end. Not sure yet, but it’s possible.

Umbridge was the main villain in the Harry Potter series. I’m right and anyone that disagrees with me has cooties.

U is for Umbridge:

Alphabbooks: T is for Tonks!

Getting down to the last few letters. This means it’s becoming slim pickings on Harry Potter characters. I wanted to not use Tonks, based only on the fact that it’s her last name, but, as others pointed out as well, she is primarily known as Tonks in the books.
Tonks is another character I really liked in the books. So much so that I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed by her in the movies. I had an image in my head that (as much as I like Natalia Tena) looked quite a bit different. That’s not to say she didn’t grow on me, but, well… mine was better.

T is for Tonks:

I did this version of her because (A) I liked this part in the books. She introduced a little silliness and fun into a situation during a rather grim time. (B) I think that scene goes a long way to show how fantastic and fun a mother she would have been.
