Getting this up late today. Story to follow, but first….

H is for Hydra!

It’s not my strongest entry. Not at all. I was having a really hard time deciding on my H creature. I actually have three other drawings I started before I even got this far. I decided on hydra late last night while just sitting around and talking in World or Warcraft with some friends. I got a little sketch done and called it a night.

My wife stayed home from work because she has been sick for about a week. She was dealing with horrible abdominal pains and wasn’t even able to really get any sleep. This morning we tried to get her a doctors appointment, but that hasn’t played out yet. Around noon I just said let’s go to the ER, which we did and everything else got put on hold.
They ran tests and did their song and dance while we sat there for a good portion of the afternoon, her in pain the whole time. I was getting nervous as I have a tendency to freak out about these sorts of things. Cutting to the point here, turned out she has an issue with her gall bladder and it needs to be removed. So it was a relief that it wasn’t something far worse. Though, she still has to deal with it because of where we live. Turns out there is only one surgeon in town and he is OUT of town for two weeks. The good news is she is fine! She just might have more discomfort for a bit.

They gave her prescriptions and a mean, bad ass kinda shot (she has been out for a couple hours now) so things are ok.
I am posting this now to lead into the fact that I am going to open up commissioned drawings of 11×14 at a rate of $50.00 as a way to help offset some of the costs we have coming up. Me and Kalle Malloy down by the drawing table.

I have mentioned a couple times that there was a “special” post coming up. Well, it is finally here! A couple months back I tossed an idea at artist Kalle Malloy about doing a series of same subject drawings on our respective sites. We started talking on Twitter a few months back and even did a drawing swap of him doing Kid Swamp thing (which is on my living room wall now) and me doing Boy Thing (both of which were kid versions of Swamp Thing and Man Thing). I am honored that he was into it! This guy is AMAZING! Still can’t believe he wanted to do it!
Things got a little out of sync over the last month or so, between work and life in general we had to keep postponing. So, we shall continue the project. Each time taking turns on who picks the subject. No time frame, so I may post other drawings for weeks before you see the next.
Now you know the gist of it. This first one was my pick. I give you the Wind in the Willows post!

I was going to do ink washes on it but at the time I got really busy with other things. So there you go.

The Dwarven post (part 2)

I ended up having an off afternoon. I couldn’t really concentrate on what I needed to be doing so rather than push to hard and not being happy with it, I came back to the dwarf for a couple hours.
This is pretty much my first real attempt at coloring my scanned inks by hand digitally. I mean I’ve done it before, but never took the time to try and do it right or try new things. It’s not perfect but, it doesn’t suck either I think. So, I give you a full color dwarf.

This exercise was a good confidence builder for me in terms of working in color digitally. A lot of credit goes to my good friend Michael T. West over at http://www.topsoilcomics.com for helping me out on a couple steps I have been foggy about for some time now.

So tomorrow is an all day Red Plains day to make up for what I didn’t get done this afternoon. Also, that special post I mentioned a month or so ago, well, that should go up tomorrow evening sometime provided everything works out. If not, then you can wait.

The Dwarven post (part 1)

So I am into fantasy stuff. Wanted to do a larger drawing just for the heck of it, thus, a dwarf. I also bought a new brush for the first time in something like 6 years. I did maybe about half of this drawing with it and was very unhappy with the lines so, I switched back to my old raggedy and trusty brush.
I realize that one day I am going to have to spend the time getting use to a new brush because mine is on it’s last leg. I just wish I didn’t jump right into this drawing with that new brush.
Okay, I am finished whining. So, here are some pictures…

I started having issues with how much he just reminded me of Gimli. So after a little consulting my wife and Professor Jason Kreska (of the Mordor institute) I dropped the braids in the beard.

Like I said, not thrilled with the new brush. In the end it’s come out okay though.
Part two of this post will come soon. I am adding color but need to spend the rest of the day on Red Plains. I’ll be posting it soon.

The Hulk VS. Wolverine post

I was going to bed and all of a sudden wanted to draw something. So I made it something for the blog. It is a really bad joke. The kind of thing I laughed at when I thought about it and almost immediately after knew better.

The Joker post

I decided today that, if nothing else, I want to try and post a new drawing on here everyday. I realize that isn’t going to happen, but I am going to try and do it whenever possible. The other part of the decision was even if I have nit picked something to shreds, I still want to post it. Well, as long as it doesn’t look like I was asleep, underwater, drinking and juggling explosive babies anyways.
Enter the Joker.

I don’t hate this drawing. I just have issues with parts of it. The pose (or lack there of) for one. I wasn’t intending to do anything fancy but, I at least wanted him to be interesting.
The other bothersome thing to me is some of the clothing details just kinda got wacky.

I figured I would still post it though. It was only another digital color screw around. Like I said, I don’t hate it. I had a bit of an off drawing day all around.

The Darth Maul post.

I did this today just to kind of screw around. I kinda wanted to do something digital in color because It’s been awhile. It’s so hard for me to look at a lot of my digital work because I get uncomfortable with “clean” look of it. On the other hand this went really quick because I didn’t worry with that and just went with it.
I also feel cheesy drawing just a head shot of Darth Maul but, whatever. Just look at it.

Also, I did this in Manga Studio 4.

Alphabeasts- F is for Fomorians

These guys are Irish in origin. I read something like 3 different descriptions of these guys. I went with the idea that they pre dated the gods (kinda like the titans of greek mythology).
I kinda rushed thru at the end so the washes aren’t quite what I wanted but, hey, there you go.
