Cherno Alpha

The second in the completed $50 11×17 commissions is Cherno Alpha punching a Leatherback Kaiju. Though, I kinda want to add a lot more blood….

cherno alpha

I posted a sketch of this Obi Wan Chernobi (actually, I was just trying to be funny… now I kinda want to do that.) on twitter a couple weeks back and have been kinda wanting to do a full drawing, so I was stoked when someone requested it. I could never do proper justice to the amazing design work in that movie though.

The SEVEN STONES KICKSTARTER is still going strong. Have you checked it out yet? Please do!

On a final note, online buddy Sean Gorman’s book Sock it to Me Comics is now available via Comixology from Alterna Comics. Funny stuff. I even did a drawing in it. Go check it out! SOCK IT TO ME COMICS!

See you tomorrow!

Wolverine and Sentinels

I recently had a $50.00 for 11×17 commission call that went on over various social talky networks. I only took on five (well, six actually.). All of the requests are for pretty fun stuff to boot!

I got started last night with Wolverine being the upper tier of something to do with things he does.

I realize I’ve been a little lazy lately and only posting new art on my facebook page with the exception of THE CABINET updates. So I’m going to post this round of commissions here as I finish them up, with hopes that will be one a day for the remainder of this week.

…And don’t forget about the SEVEN STONES KICKSTARTER going on right now that I’m contributing to!

THE CABINET Update #2 & SEVEN STONES KICKSTARTER

Time for another quick update on the book and other things, including a kickstarter for another project I’m contributing to.
Things are moving along well on THE CABINET. I’m working my way through chapter 3 and Christian Sager is finishing up the dialog and refining chapter 4. In fact he probably has that about wrapped up now. That will leave only chapter 5!

Working on this book continues to be a great experience. For example, I just finished up the first 2 page spread in THE CABINET. If you follow any of my social networking type things, I’m sure you’ve noticed.
In the script Christian had a very deliberate thing he wanted to do for the pacing of a section of pages that make up our main group of characters traveling to the arctic. We had 2 pages laid out as 9 panels each in a grid like format. When I came to it I suggested making it into a two page spread and adding a large panel in the center. You know, because I wanted to make it way more complicated for me to do.
So we spent a day going back and forth with the layout and making sure the flow worked and that the dialog would fit, etc. We finally agreed that we could make it work and I went to it. It took both of us being open and a little creative to get it to work but we’re glad we did. Here is a peek at it (sorry if this is like the hundredth time you’ve seen it, I’m adding something new to look at in a sec!)…

Screen shot 2013-08-04 at 1.00.43 PM

There have been a couple other pages that I’ve become a bit more comfortable about making big suggestions on recently too. I’m just finding that comfort zone and a big part of that is collaborating with someone who is totally open to it. So, yeah, I like working with Christian.

Here is your official update #2 page…

In other news…

The kickstarter for the SEVEN STONES Anthology went live in the wee hours of this past Saturday morning (and is off to a great start!). SEVEN STONES is a project based in the Wrecked Earth world created by C.E.L. Welsh. Some of you may know it from his novel CLUTCH. (Which at the very least a few of you may recognize the cover because I did the colors for it)
It’s a pretty exciting project that involves 7 different writers and 7 different artists. There is the novel and then the Graphic novel version. I’m stoked to get to work With Chris again on a story form the character Clutch’s past. There are a lot of amazing people working on this project and the rewards are already pretty great and only going to get better.
We would love for you to consider supporting us with your hard earned moola but, would love it just as much if you helped us spread the word! SEVEN STONES KICKSTARTER
Also, if you are a blogger, interviewer, baker or anchor woman/man and would like to interview any of us about the project, shoot me an email at allmattersgreyATgmailDOTcom.

On a final note, Christian Sager and I will be at SPX in Maryland in September! Make sure you come out and say Hey!
Also, there is new stuff in my SHOP since the last post, so check that out too!

As always, Thanks for reading and I’ll sees yous next times!

THE CABINET Update!

Hello all! Time for an update!

Christian Sager and I decided to start posting regular updates leading into the completion of our graphic novel, THE CABINET. That and it’s about time I did a new blog post.

After being derailed a little due to my wife and I’s medical woes, we are making headway! Our (AMAZING) Kickstrter backers received a PDF copy of the first chapter right before we headed out to Heroes last month. Response has been good, as far as I know anyway.
I’m moving onto chapter 3 now and feeling pretty good so far. We still have a lot to go, but now we are moving at a steady pace. I’m working on the book daily, from the time I get up in the morning until I go to bed in the morning.

We’re starting to get into the arctic portion of the story as well, I’m pretty excited about that! With each of these updates I’ll also be sharing new art. So, here is a page…

cabinet p32

You might notice the washes are blue and the gutters white. While we used some blue in the kickstarter preview, we have since changed our use of it. We are using the blue washes and white gutters to signify flashbacks now and red washes, black gutters for present day. Seems to be working out so far.

Christian is heading out to SDCC so he didn’t really have time to add anything this time around. Maybe you’ll bump into him there and he’ll tell you all about the inner workings and what not!
I’ll be doing another update on THE CABINET soon! You can also follow my FACEBOOK PAGE, I post a lot of work in progress from pages while I’m working.

In other news…

Chip Reece and I have been somewhat floored by the response to the METAPHASE preview .
There is now a Spanish translation available and a Portuguese one in the works. Turns out the book has gained a lot of fans in Brazil. Chip and I recently did an interview with a Brazilian site as well… CHECK IT OUT.

I’ll also be contributing to the Seven Stones comic anthology which is about to start it’s Kickstarter in the coming month. I’ll bother you more about that soon.

I also want to say a huge congrats to THE GUNS OF SHADOW VALLEY guys on the crazy successful kickstarter they just wrapped up. You are all better for it because that bok is going to be awesome.

Lastly, in my ever continuing quest to afford to eat and stuff, I direct your attention once again to my Etsy shop. I’ve added new prints and have been updating with new random original art. All at pretty low prices. Like, say this Hellboy drawing that’s up on there right now..
hellboy sog colorsmall
Or the recently added Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles print (only available for a short time.) Everything comes with a free sketch too!

Okay, enough of that stuff. See you guys next time!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Drawn by a middle aged man.

Goofed off a bit and drew the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles last night. I haven’t drawn them since I was a young teeny bopper. Now it’s time to get back to Cabinet pages!

I slapped a quick run of colors on it..

And here is the original.

I might redo the colors once I have a little more time and see about making a small print run.

Speaking of prints… I just added a bunch of new ones to my Etsy shop! Go check it out HERE!

My Heroes Con 2013!

My first Heroes Con has come and gone, and it was fantastic. It’s only been 3 days since I got home and I am already feeling like I’m forgetting the things I want to remember. So much happened in such a small amount of time. I, unfortunately, didn’t take many pictures. Mostly only pics of drawings I did and I even forgot to take pics of some of those. I did take one bad photo of Dave Wachter and Robert Wilson while we were hanging out at the party on Sunday, but that’s it. Hardly seems right.

The experience was great and I met a lot of great people and made a few fantastic friends. I ran into a couple ego’s but, mostly everyone was pleasant and I can’t complain at all.
It was awesome to finally meet and hang out in person with my Cabinet collaborator Christian Sager! We hit it off well and I think we will continue to work together for a long time beyond the Cabinet. There were a ton of people I finally got to meet that I’ve been friendly with on the social networking circles for a while now. Some creators, some fans, and all friendly and awesome. Three of which, Dave Wachter, Robert Wilson and Rafer Roberts were awesome in their advice to me on my first con and just being all round swell guys that I’m happy to call friends. Christian, Dave and Brian Winkeler were all great roommates for the weekend and a huge thanks to them for that as well! Oh, it was awesome to get to meet Fabian Rangel Jr. in person Finally as well! (I know I’m going to forget tons of people..)

I lost my wallet pretty much as soon as I got to the hotel. So I got to start Friday off with a little stress, but my lovely wife wired me some money and all was okay (and wet… as Sager and I walked to get the money in pretty heavy rain). Huge thanks to the hotel bar waitress who found my wallet and turned it into the front desk!

Saturday was great and I met online friends and fellow Alpha-crew mates like Ben Towle, Rich Barret, Henry Eudy, Jason Folkes, and Herc. We had dinner at a pretty fantastic vegan place called Bean. If you are ever in Charlotte, GO THERE.
I even got a surprise visit from Hobo Kings collaborator, Chris Reilly.

I was pretty timid and nervous for the most part. It is still amazing to me that this was my first Con at a table and I was on the same Indy Island block as Evan Dorkin, Peter Bagge and Dustin Harbin! Me being the amazing social animal that I am didn’t talk to any of them because I was too nervous (Though I had to say excuse me to them a lot to get out and use the bathroom). I got to meet some great people who have been very supportive over the last couple years online. Supportive of the Cabinet and supportive of me in general. (I’m looking at you Robert Deans and Xylon Otterburn)

As if the craziness going on around us wasn’t enough, there was some crazy Republican convention going on at the same time. This led to some annoying/hilarious times in elevators.

The reaction to my work and to the first chapter of the Cabinet was great. It is the first time I’ve had the experience of fellow creators telling me how much they are liking it in person. It was both overwhelming and sobering. I came home with a fresh outlook on the book and a renewed ambition to get it finished. Hell, meeting Christian in person and spending the time we did together was enough to get me all re-excited about the book!

I know I’m forgetting a ton of stuff and I’m kinda rushing through so I can get back to work. I waited a few days so I didn’t just gush and sound like an even bigger dork.

Thank you to the people in charge of putting the Heroes Convention together, I am totally looking forward to attending again next year. Huge thank you’s to everyone who came by our table and talked to us, or bought books or art work! Thanks to all the creators who were cool and friendly!

I know some people have already done Heroes reports, So I’m going to link to some of those here…

Christian Sager

Ben Towle

Dave Wachter

Henry Eudy

A special one with Mike Freiheit, who was across the aisle from Cristian and I. (next to Benjamin Marra who I am sad I never made it to his table, but was super awesome to talk to at the party sunday night). I discovered this morning that he did a sketch of me during the con. It’s pretty dope.

Another reason I waited until today to post about Heroes was I wanted to wait until Dave’s Kickstarter for THE GUNS OF SHADOW VALLEY was live. It is an amazing webcomic and they are putting together a beautiful oversized hardcover to finish it up. You definitely want to get in on supporting this book and ant take advantage of the rewards!

Finally, here are a few pics of drawings I did at the con (I missed a couple of the drawings I did in peoples sketchbooks, but I hope they enjoyed them at least!)

It was awesome and I didn’t deserve most of the kind words I got! Thanks to everyone and Hope to see you all soon!!

Free Comic Book Day 2013 and much more!

It’s been longer than I realized since I posted something new here. What better way to come back to it than Free Comic Book Day!!
Like the last couple of years I’ll be at Arkham Comics in Blytheville Ar. signing and doing sketches. I will also have a limited number of the METAPHASE preview comics! Because… yeah.. those have made it back from the printer and are looking pretty good! METAPHASE writer, Chip Reece will be at Prairie Dog Comics in Wichita, KA. doing a signing as well!
Can’t make it to a signing? didn’t get a chance to order a physical copy of the METAPHASE preview? Bam, we got you covered… The preview will be available for free from Alterna Comics via Comixology starting on Free Comic Book Day!
Also releasing on Free Comic Book Day is issue 2 of Doc Unknown by Fabian Rangle Jr., Ryan Cody and Ed Brisson! I’ve read it, it is fun stuff! Bonus: I did a pin-up in this issue! This is one of my favorite adventure comics right now, make sure you check it out!!

Another tid bit of news is a reminder that I will be sharing a table with my CABINET collaborator, Christian Sager, at Heroes Con June 7-9th in Charlotte North Carolina! I plan to have some new prints and sketches available and with a little luck, a 6 page mini comic (provided I can get it finished in time!). Speaking of THE CABINET… I’m finally pumping those pages out at a sorta regular rate. Here… take a look at a recently finished one!

Metaphase Announcment!

metaphase title white

While Christian Sager and I were running the kickstarter campaign for The Cabinet, we got some support and coverage from Stash My Comics thanks to writer Chip Reece.
After things wrapped up Chip contacted me about a graphic novel he was writing. We talked a bit back and forth about the story and what not. The story involving a boy with Down Syndrome who’s father is a super hero and his desperate ambition to be like his dad. Chip explained to me the inspiration for the story, his own son Oliver was born with Down Syndrome. My initial feelings were a little shaky. I didn’t want to work on a story that had it’s heart in the right place but ultimately fell short and was empty in it’s feeling. I also didn’t want to have to turn down someone with such a passion for the story they wanted to tell. Luckily, I didn’t need to worry about any of that. I was treated to a synopsis/preview that showed Chip didn’t just have the heart for it but the story to boot. One of the main reasons I signed on was the compassion and emotion Chip brought to what he showed me.
Also, considering I don’t do much in the realm of super heroes, it’s kinda fun to get the chance to play in that sandbox for a bit.

Today Alterna Comics (who I have a long history with) announced they will be releasing “Metaphase”, a graphic novel written by Chip Reece with art by me. They also included some preview art, I suggest going over there and checking out the OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

There will also be a 10 page preview coming soon from Alterna via comiXology. We announced the book today because it’s World Down Syndrome Awareness Day (3/21/13). There is also a facebook page devoted to the project.

So check it out and keep your eyes open!

General(y in the) Hospital

Man, it’s been busy! Trying to finish commissions, get a couple things in by deadlines and my ever continuing battle to get caught up on The Cabinet.
As far as my health, everything seems to be fine. I still find I get tired a little easier than I use to, but that’s getting better as well. So that’s something!
This post is for a couple of reasons, so I’ll just get to it…

As a lot of you might be aware, my wife, Mandy, had some gal bladder issues a little over a year ago that put her in the hospital. What should have been a simple issue to deal with, loads of people have the procedure to remove the gal bladder every year, turned into a large headache peppered with bills and her not having the surgery to remove her gal bladder.
There is a slight complication in the procedure for her because she has a cyst on her pancreas. A cyst that’s just in a awkward spot when dealing with the gal bladder is what they said. Then, of course there is the other issues one thinks about when finding out about a cyst on a pancreas.

It became fairly apparent that the reason no one was really doing anything for my wife came down to one simple factor… we didn’t have insurance and weren’t wealthy. I had just lost my day job when this happened as well.

So, now that there was a little recap, let’s jump ahead to now. Again, as some of you already know (bear with me, I know this “I was in the hospital” thing is getting old) I ended up in the hospital for about a month in December. I was released in January and spent the next month resting and trying to get back to normal. During this (full, including hospital) time our friend J was here with us from Seattle. He flew back the beginning of February.
The week he was suppose to leave, Mandy ended up in the hospital again for a couple of days because of her gal bladder issues. Lot’s of things happened, tests, confusion and an almost rehash of the year prior. She wasn’t able to go with to take J to the airport and in fact ended up going to the hospital AGAIN that day.

I’m not even going to talk about our medical bills at this point.

I realize I’m getting a little long winded here, I’ll get to the point. We had to do an epic song and dance, I’m talking original Footloose if they danced with machetes in their mouths and shot at each other, but we finally got a surgeon to get things taken care of.

Again, I’m not even going to talk about medical bills at this point.

So tomorrow is the day. Tomorrow my wife, my love… goes into have a pretty involved surgery that is expected to leave her in the hospital for 3 to 5 days and at home (out of work) for up to 6 weeks.
I worry a lot about pretty much everything, so obviously I’m a little nervous about tomorrow, but I am more relieved that she will finally be able to relax and get back to normal.

So, because of all of this, I am putting Alphabots to the side. I’m going to be pretty busy taking care of my wife and handling day to day things as well as a pretty hefty drawing workload. I do hope to maybe catch up on it down the road, but we’ll just have to see.

What does this mean for The Cabinet you might ask? Not much hopefully. I’ll still be able to work on it daily now. My goal by the end of this month is to have The Cabinet the only comic I’m working on with hopes of finishing up the art in the next couple months. I truly am sorry for the delay on the book as well as updates. Lot’s of unforseen things have happened, but I assure you Christian and I are working to get this out soon! Christian posted an update on the kickstarter recently that includes new art, you can view that HERE.

There is another project or two I’ve been working on that will get proper announcements soon. I’ve also finished up a illustrating a couple short stories for a couple different Grayhaven anthologies. One of which is available now and features the first bit of drawing I did once I got home from the hospital, you can get it at the GRAYHAVEN WEBSITE

To finish up, a drawing, because I hate doing these posts without some kind of art.
I have met or become internet friendly with a lot of comic creators over the last year or two. Some of which I work with, some of which are just good people with good work. One such person is Fabian Rangel Jr. Fabian and I have talked about working on something and hopefully that will happen one day! I am a fan of his stuff, Fabian is an excellent comic book writer!
The newest book from Fabian (artist Ryan Cody and letterer Ed Brisson) is “Doc Unknown”. A fantastic pulpy hero romp that brings to mind classic serials and Mignola-ish fun. I liked it so much, I did a drawing of it this past weekend….

doc unknown

So that’s that for now. Oh, I do have that facebook page, a lot of drawings and sketches get posted there that don’t make it on here.
