Man on Rock Returns!

Years ago my good friend Michael T. West and I use to put out a anthology mini-comic called “Empty bare naked vacant” (It came from a sign language book, we used it with the same punctuation as the definition, but I really don’t remember it now.)
I did a series of one page comics called “Man on Rock”. It might even be the closest I came to having a “popular” character (popular as in 12 people liked it maybe). I’ve wanted to resurrect him for awhile, but I never really had time or couldn’t come up with a way to start him back out. I wanted him to progress. Those early comics were pretty sloppy and usually poorly laid out. Also they were in black and white. I knew I at least wanted him to be in color if I brought him back.
So, seeing as how today is Creator Owned Day, I decided to kick off the new Man on Rock series…

To be fair to myself, I did this all this morning and wrote the dialog as I lettered it. They will be better thought out in the future.
If all goes well, I will start trying to do new installments weekly once Alphabeasts comes to a close.

Alphabeasts- S is for Sea Hag!

When I was trying to decide on what I wanted to do for S I ran into a couple personal issues. I wanted to do a few different things but I also wanted to try and stay away from subjects I had already borrowed from (Star Wars, Dark Crystal.. etc..). I also wanted to do something based on an mythical creature again because it’s been awhile.
I actually came pretty close to doing the Sea Hag from Popeye. Then I realized I wanted to do something kinda creepy-ish.

There’s a Way I Feel Right Now….

I ordered a new drawing tablet for the computers this week.This is a gigantic upgrade for me because the one I had been using isn’t even around anymore. That and I never really spend money on these type of things. Mainly because of price but, also, I never really had a need or justification for it.
Between tax returns and projects I am working on, it seems a smart investment at this point.
To clarify on the jump I made, I went from a Wacom “saphire” to a Wacom “intuos4L”. Pretty big leap for this kid.
I did this drawing Manga Studio playing around with it. It’s a take on an album cover. Dinosaur Jr. actually. I think at this point you are either going to know or at least (hopefully) not hate the drawing.
“Wish you’d help me, don’t know how….”

I still have a couple things to figure out for comfort sake, but I think I am in love with this thing.
Also, My wife. She has been incredibly supportive in all of my recent endeavors, even with all of the medical crap. 3 Lovely cheers for her!!

The Robot Apocalypse will Include Bears.

While the rest of you are going about your pro/anti Valentines day routines, I feel it’s my duty to warn of a threat. . . FROM THE FUTURE!!
It’s simple, the robots are going to rise up. The key to fighting them successfully is bears. The side that controls the bears controls the front!

Alphabeasts- R is for Rockbiter!

So, here we are at R. I have a long history with the Rockbiter character from the Never Ending Story. More than a couple times I have sat down to do a drawing of these guys and more than a few times abandoned it to frustration. It always truck me that it shouldn’t be a hard thing to draw, but for some reason I could never do something with it I was interested in. I think some of it is the creatures odd design (that’s me passing the blame on to someone else…).

The Ghost Rider Post.

I have become quite attached to twitter. I’ve met loads of cool type people and connected with many great creators. It’s an odd thing as I am not the most social animal around. An awesome artist and good twitter type friend, @owl_song, and I started doing a #FridayDrinkAndDraw on twitter last week and continued last night. To great success even, a few people got involved. 4 or 5, but amazing artists like Kalle Malloy and German Shible , Michael T. West and Mr. Burnt Lobster.
Some of us went with a theme to draw Ghost Rider. I’m sure most of you have heard by now about the amazingly petty and shitty lawsuit Marvel comics filed against the creator of the character Ghost Rider, Gary Freidrich. Because he was drawing a character he came up with at conventions, a judge graciously awarded Marvel Comics (who I might point out are about to make probable millions on a new Ghost Rider film while Gary is financially strapped) $17000 in the lawsuit. It’s just ridiculous.
Steve Niles (of 30 days of night and the bands Gray Matter and 3 fame) started a fundraiser for Gary Freidrich. . I did A Ghost Rider drawing with intent to donate any money made from it to the fund Steve Niles started, but I still have it. I did donate a small amount on my own, but I would like to donate money made from this. Plus, I was amazed when I woke up on the couch at 3 or 4 in the morning (it is called #FridayDrinkAndDraw after all) and looked at the drawing and was like ” Damn, that’s actually pretty sweet”.
Ghost Rider:

Well, I think it’s a nice drawing considering the circumstances… I am going to post this in my ETSY SHOP for 40 bucks. If it sells, I will donate all of the money to Gary Freidrich via Steve Niles. Something to consider maybe???

New print for sale: “Solitude”.

I guess a few people seen the black and white post of this the other night. I changed a couple minor things and added some tones. I did the whole thing in Manga Studio. I kinda like it and it is now the second print I am making for sale.

Just like the “Dwarf Relaxing” print it is 11×14 and printed on heavy stock. They are all signed as well. There are still a few of the Dwarf prints available as well. So, it would be neat if you and all your friends checked it out and, um, stuff…

Paint a Vulgar Picture.

So I’ve been working on a short project written by Geoffrey D. Wessel for an anthology comic entitled “Unite and Take Over Volume 2”. It has a theme of stories based on or around songs by the Smiths. It’s only a 5 page story, but I came on as artist rather close to deadline. It is due by this coming Tuesday. I am actually inking page 4 now and 5 tomorrow.
Part of how I was able to get it together in time (I came on doing art, color and lettering) is thanks to my long time friend and collaborator Michael T. West . He came on board to handle the coloring so we could speed things up. He did a wonderful job too.
Then, a bump in the road…

Turns out that somewhere along the way there was a crossed wire in communications. Geoffrey was under the impression the book was in color. Once we got the first page together we were all pretty excited and Geoffrey sent it along to the guy putting the book together, good thing too. That’s when he found out it was black and white.
There was sudden panic and running around in circles and I am pretty sure I was involved in burning down a small village. Then reason took hold and we switched to doing gray tones and Michael was top shit with getting it turned around quickly.
These things happen, wasn’t anyones fault and it was only a hiccup in the process.
I am posting this as a preview of the story we are putting together and so you guys can see the great color work Mr. West put together for this.

So you’ll notice you get no words. Well, that’s because you have to wait for the book.
So I think we were all very proud of this story and page. It’s hard to let the colors go at first. But fear not! We are almost finished and Michaels work on the gray tones are EVEN BETTER!! I actually prefer the way the story looks now! It’s also exciting for him and I to work together on something again, it’s been far too long. Hope you enjoy and I will post more when the book is closer to release.

Drawing just to draw.

Started doodling while talking with friends. They are playing their Warcrafts while I want to and can’t seem to switch off the drawing mode. I started thinking about maybe doing a new print. So this is kinda like a rough version of what I was thinking while messing around.

So. Yep. This is a possible character from the Old Ones comics that might be happen one day. Also a possible print in the making.
