I have become quite attached to twitter. I’ve met loads of cool type people and connected with many great creators. It’s an odd thing as I am not the most social animal around. An awesome artist and good twitter type friend, @owl_song, and I started doing a #FridayDrinkAndDraw on twitter last week and continued last night. To great success even, a few people got involved. 4 or 5, but amazing artists like Kalle Malloy and German Shible , Michael T. West and Mr. Burnt Lobster.
Some of us went with a theme to draw Ghost Rider. I’m sure most of you have heard by now about the amazingly petty and shitty lawsuit Marvel comics filed against the creator of the character Ghost Rider, Gary Freidrich. Because he was drawing a character he came up with at conventions, a judge graciously awarded Marvel Comics (who I might point out are about to make probable millions on a new Ghost Rider film while Gary is financially strapped) $17000 in the lawsuit. It’s just ridiculous.
Steve Niles (of 30 days of night and the bands Gray Matter and 3 fame) started a fundraiser for Gary Freidrich. . I did A Ghost Rider drawing with intent to donate any money made from it to the fund Steve Niles started, but I still have it. I did donate a small amount on my own, but I would like to donate money made from this. Plus, I was amazed when I woke up on the couch at 3 or 4 in the morning (it is called #FridayDrinkAndDraw after all) and looked at the drawing and was like ” Damn, that’s actually pretty sweet”.
Ghost Rider:
Well, I think it’s a nice drawing considering the circumstances… I am going to post this in my ETSY SHOP for 40 bucks. If it sells, I will donate all of the money to Gary Freidrich via Steve Niles. Something to consider maybe???

The worst part is Marvel has already made an ass load of money off of the Ghost Rider sequel. This is not a Marvel production so they were paid option money for this film before it even went into production. I read 5 Marvel tittles that I reserve at my LCBS do in support of Garry Friedrich in April II will not buy a single book Marvel publishes. It has to bein two months because my retailer of more than 20 years orders his books 2 months in advance from Diamond and it would be a real jerk thing to do, telling him to eat the books he has already ordered for me. I wish I could say this was a protest that would last forever but I follow creators and they are not guilty by association for working for Marvel.
Well said. i didn’t consider, but your right, that marvel has pretty much already made that money. It’s just a shit move all together. Not like it is a new thing, what with Kirby and on and on, but the thing that struck me was how petty it seems.
I only pick up maybe 3 Marvel books a month, i think. At least regularly anyway. I dig not wanting to stiff the LCBS, I wouldn’t dream of it. I am thinking of reverting to my no Marvel or DC stance, but honestly, meh, one fight at a time, you know? I can easily say I pick up Marvel bull shit that has no teeth. It doesn’t grab you well. I think if they keep this up it will only get worse. I think it will just scare some creators away… well, at least until a paycheck is involved. Bahh! I guess that’s unfair though. I dont blame any creatives for Marvel/Disneys terrible moral stumbles.
