Alphabooks: J is for James Potter!

This is another of those weeks where I had a limited pick while sticking to the Harry Potter theme. It’s also another week where I re-drew my choice like 9 times before settling and hurrying through it. That’s not to say I don’t like it though. It’s kinda up there among my favorites for some reason.

J is for James Potter:

I went with this version partially because it seemed more appropriate in line with the book and partially because I got to draw a dead potter skeleton.
I did almost settle on a more wholesome cutesy version. I didn’t follow through and finish it, but I thought I would show the beginning sketch.

It’s not a finished deal and his arm is a bit odd, but you get the idea of where I almost went.

THE CABINET Kickstarter is successful!

It’s true, folks! Our kickstarter campaign ended this morning at 113%! We made over $800 past our goal! We are so excited and can’t wait to get the book out to you! Huge, gigantic thank yous to everyone who helped spread the word, backed and just generally supported us! We will be posting updates as we finish the book and will be showing more art and behind the scenes looks.

The Cabinet kickstarter is coming to an end! (+Jason Vorhees)

As I write this THE CABINET, a historical horror graphic novel written by Christian Sager and drawn by me, has a kickstarter that is in it’s last 19 hours. That’s 19 hours left to become a backer and get cool stuff like original art, hardcover copies of the book with a sketch inside, limited edition prints and much more.

Last night I sat on my couch with a pad of paper watching the Unborn, intending to just do a little goofing around. Before I knew it the movie was over and I had drawn nothing. Just couldn’t come up with anything that got me ready to. So, I ended up doing a sketch Jason Vorhees form the Friday the 13th flicks. Got up this morning and slapped a little color on it and decided to share it here.

Also, quickly, of course I hated reading about what happened in Colorado last night. That is just a sickening thing and I couldn’t begin to imagine what friends and families involved must be feeling.
Already I’ve seen people talking about the possibility of negative talk about comics and violence as well as violence in movies. This is not a comic book related incident. This is not a movie related incident. This is a gun related incident.
The fact that this type of “mass shooting” has become almost common place in this country and people STILL insist that tightening gun laws is to strip them of a “god given right” is appalling to me.
I also find it unfortunate that we can most likely look at any of the last times this happened and see exactly how the coverage and conversations will go this time. It never changes.
People want to fight with each other over taking someones right to marry who they choose, their right to choose what to do with their own bodies, or even the right to proper health care. These issues, that shouldn’t even be issues, are what everyone has been focusing on in the past few elections. There will always be a murmur on tightening gun control then people will say “that’s my god given right”.
Like, I don’t see how it’s a good idea that I can go to the store and buy a case of beer, ingredients for tacos, dish washing soap and a new shot gun, all from the same place. Guns, and some people, are dangerous. Guns are a problem.

So, yeah, sorry, it’s my opinion or whatever.

Cute as I wanna.

So I woke up to the awesome news that THE CABINET kickstarter had hit 103%! To celebrate, I doodled a T-Rex enjoying a comic book.

I slowed down on the cover concept a day train because I’ve been busy with other things. We still have 43 hours left in the fundraiser for THE CABINET so I may get another one in before it ends Saturday morning. We still need your support though! It’s wise to try and have a bit of a buffer in case unforeseen things like people changing there minds at the last minute and such. We also still have plenty of great rewards still available, including original art and limited edition prints.

It’s Monday and time for a new alphabooks installment! I had to do a quick one and get back to work, so, here you go…

So there won’t be a THE CABINET cover sketch today as I’m working on some other things. They should resume tomorrow though.

Busy day today, so today’s cover concept was a quick one.

I feel kinda “meh” about this one, but I think some of that is because of how much I liked yesterdays. Waking up every morning and going straight to drawing a cover with little to no planning is kinda tough after 6 days. I might skip tomorrow because of alphabooks, but then again, I may do one and post it along with tomorrows alphabooks entry.

We have 5 days left to raise the last $2,000 of our $6,000 goal. If you’ve been watching and thinking about contributing or holding out for a certain reward, now might be a good time to jump in. It’s crunch time, as they say. I don’t know who they are, but yeah, they say it.
Christian wrote a great article a few weeks back with some thoughts on crowd funding, I shared it before, but I wanted to share it again as we close in on the finish line. READ THE ARTICLE

Cover sketch number 5! I slept in today and really kinda just threw this together REALLY quick. I changed it like 10 times too. I think I like the general idea, but it might need a little refining, but, hey, it’s only a sketch!

THE CABINET cover sketch #4

I decided to change it up a bit today. Changed up the color scheme a bit and went with something that’s more drawn than designed I guess.

I keep referring to these as sketches because they aren’t meant to be the final product. I am basically waking up each morning thinking about what I’ll do for todays cover. I just go sit down and get right to it. Obviously I would put a little more time into the finished cover.
So there will be 6, maybe 5 (I have other work to do so I might have to skip one day) more of these cover mock-ups before the end of our kickstarter. We encourage everyone to let us know if there is one you like more than the others. It is possible that if enough people like one or two a lot, that may end up the cover of the book!
Of course, we have to be able to put the book out though. We only have 7 days left on THE CABINET KICKSTARTER and still need support! As I’ve said for the past month, help spread the word and/or contribute if you can!! Amazing and magical rewards await you! People will adore you! Well, Christian and I will adore you anyway.

this cover places a little more focus on the Cocytus. The strange infection has to come from somewhere, right? Is it an infection? What type of thing could cause such madness??

THE CABINET cover sketch #2

So, I’m trying to keep to what I said yesterday and post a new cover idea everyday until the kickstarter campaign ends.

A large part of this story has to do with being stranded and isolated. I wanted to try and focus on that for this version.
I already have an idea for tomorrows, so that should be up in the afternoon.
