THE DARK is a series of short horror stories I do when I have a minute. I write and draw them but sometimes I also work with writer friends who write really good stories. Because I’m lucky that way. I love horror. I love all types. Good and bad. I love folklore and legends. This project is a loving hug to all the things I love.
It’s been about 5 years since Source Point Press released THE DARK: Vol. One. That also means it’s been about 5 years since the last new story. What do you want!? I was busy drawing other comics! SPIDER marks a couple firsts for the series. It’s the longest story so far. I drew page 3 first and almost 2 years before I was able to sit down and focus on it. I also went back and forth on writing ahead of drawing and drawing ahead of writing. Which I thought was going to sink me but, I’m overall happy in the end, I guess.
A big inspiration for this story is A) I think spiders are rad, creepy little monsters. As long as they stay away from me. I was bitten by a Brown Recluse a few years ago and since then, I practically run screaming. B) Group think, hive mind, conformity stuff creeps me the fuck out. I looked at this as a kind of cult like structure. When you’re lonely and scared, you’re probably much more susceptible to a spider monster saying…um… nice things?
It feels good to be back! The gap won’t be as long this time! In fact… Coming soon… THE DARK: BETTY!
