Superhero-Bot Drawings & Prints Exclusively on Deniath.com!

I’ve mentioned the series of robot drawings inspired by robots I was doing exclusively for Deniath.com. Well, today is the day that the first part of that sale goes up! Deniath, if you don’t already know, is a member based site that runs special limited time sales. Like these original drawings normally get sold by me for 40 or 50 bucks and they have them on sale for almost half off!
There are also prints available of all of the drawings.
They have broke them up into two groups. Today (March 28th) the Marvel Comics inspired drawings are up and then the DC Comics inspired set will be available March 30th.

Here is a look at one of the Marvel-bots, Doctor Strange-Bot…

So, tell your friends, get out your credit card or mug an 8 year old for his lunch money and go to Deniath and sign up if your not already a member and buy something and help me out!!

Alphabeasts- X is for Xenomorph!

This weeks alphabeast comes from a remote location. Before I got around to my alphabeast for this week I was invited out to a friends house out in the middle of nowhere. I decided to stay a few extra days once he left and try and get a bunch of drawing done without the distractions of video games and internet. So basically I have no scanner and am having to do this post using my phone. So this weeks alpahabeasts is only a phone pic…
Once I get back home I may scan and post properly. Sorry for the lack of scanned image.

The Missing Dimension You’ll Probably Wish I Never Found.

This past Sunday I downloaded the 3D sculpting program Sculptris (it’s free software, you can get it here.) I haven’t attempted to sculpt anything in roughly a bazillion years. On top of that, I’ve never really tried to mess with 3D sculpting software. So I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the software was to just leap right into.
I mean that in terms of just getting started. I still basically have no idea what the hell is going on. Over the last few days when stepping away from the drawing table for a break, I have been trying to spend more time learning with it. If nothing else it’s kinda fun.
So I thought I would share a few screen shots of my fumbling ahead in figuring out what I’m doing. Most of it really doesn’t look too bad. At least I think anyways.

These first couple are the very first thing I did with the software. I started out with playing around with my character “E-no” from my old Jungle Planet comics.

I was mainly trying to play around with the different settings, lighting and whatnots.

I did this one later that night before going back to my drawing table.

I also did a bit of color on him, but (believe me) you don’t need to see that.

Yesterday I started on a sculpt of me (or of my TreeBeerd version of me, I guess.) I have made it my hour or so in the afternoon project for the week. Just trying to use the different tools and play with some stuff. Just something I am playing with when taking a breather from all the other drawing.

That’s where that’s at at the moment. No where near finished and it may even be quite some time before it is. I am realizing some miss-steps I made along the way and look forward to finding more!
It’s fun learning this. I look forward to sharing more in the future hopefully.

Alphabeasts- W is for Werewolf

Oddly, I started yesterday on my alphabeast and was about half way through it. I was going to do Weeping Angel from Doctor Who. Two things: 1)The drawing just really wasn’t working and I knew I had to start over. 2)I’m only just now accepting and watching the newer Doctor Who series. I enjoyed the classics and was fine leaving it there. My wife really got into the new series so I am watching them with her as she re-watches. I sorta feel like there is PLENTY of Doctor Who related stuff on the internet, so I don’t see a need to contribute as of yet.

I always spend a ton of time trying to come up with an Alphabeast subject that I think may not be done by 20 other people as well. While this has led to some cool subjects, it is also a pain in the ass sometimes. Not to mention sometimes you just never can tell. So many creative people working on the project it’s hard to guess what people might do.
I actually almost did the Wraith. I’m talking Charlie Sheen “the Wraith” but then I remembered I hated cars and Sheen bugs me.

This morning when I realized I was going to have to start over, I realized that I was trying to hard. I decided to start over and do a classic and something that, honestly, I got excited about doing as soon as I decided to do it…

W is for Werewolf:

I went with the classic Lon Chaney Jr. Wolfman. For quickly throwing it together, I am really pleased with how it came out. I don’t have anything witty to say. I friggin’ love werewolves.

As a terrible bonus, I am also giving you a special bad doodle joke Alphabeast…

W is for Wampa:

(Sorry)

Pen Sketchiness.

The other day I was wondering about how “diverse” in my drawing I really have been over the last couple years. Mainly meaning tools and such. I use to try and use a bit of everything on a regular basis. Now days I stick with brush and ink and Manga studio (For the most part. I do use photoshop and sketchbook sometimes as well.)
I spent a lot of years using nibs and other pens. I loved nibs, I just kinda moved away, I think they were
a confidence builder in moving to brushes as a more exclusive tool.

My point is that I just kinda stopped using things other than brushes or digital. Sure, the level of what you can mimic in a good drawing program is amazing, but it doesn’t feel quite the same. You know?

So a couple days ago I was out and decided to pick up a couple new pens. I literally haven’t used a pen to draw in so long I actually didn’t have any I could use. I do have a nice tech pen set, but they are all clogged up and unusable until I take the time to clean them real good.

I bought A 5 pack of various size Prismacolor pens. Something kinda cheap just for some screwing around.
I was kinda surprised how much different I work now with a pen from my usual brush work. It feels like it came back naturally, but it’s a little different than I have grown accustom to.
So I thought I would share some pen type sketches…

One of the first sketches in a sketchbook right after I got the pens:

This was a goofing warm up sketch from this morning (his jaw and chin are against me):

Here’s one:

And I threw some color on that last one:

So I think I will keep using pens here and there and even maybe start incorporating them into my work here and there again. It was a good exercise and I’m glad I did it. I also think I will begin branching out even more again. I forgot ho much fan it is to play with loads of different tools!

You like ghosts? I like ghosts.

A couple things to talk about here tonight.
First off, I have mentioned doing the Super hero inspired robots for deniath.com . They are all finished and shipped off Monday afternoon. they are for a special daily sale they do and all 12 will be available for purchase. I am not sure about the exact date yet, but I do know it’s very soon. I will post on here when I know.
In the meantime (no relation to the Helmet song) they did an interview with me that went up today. So if you find yourself in a crazy position where you want to read an interview with someone with a large bag of social awkwardness and a small box of how to interact with other humans, I suggest you read it here. I also give a little insight into some of whats coming up this year.
Here is a preview of one of the drawings that will be for sale (there will be prints as well):

Another big bit of cool news is I am getting ready to do research for a new web comic. It will be a biopic project that I work on as time permits, but is a project I have talked about doing for many years.
I recently got in contact with Robert Troutman of Paranormal investigations of Arkansas about going out on an investigation or two with them. I talked with Robert on the phone today and it seems we are a go!
The idea is I wanted to go on a paranormal investigation with someone that is just kind of the average person. Someone who is very dedicated, but who doesn’t have a television show budget to work with. Someone who does it as a hobby, out of love and a desire to help people, and because of the pure enjoyment of it. I just want to go, observe, get their story and how they handle it and write a comic that tells everything from my perspective as an observer. I have a fascination with this stuff as well as a healthy respect for people who do it. This makes me very weary of watching some of the popular television shows about the subject. Seems to be a ton of showboating. Though I can’t help but watch. I mean, being scared is kinda fun sometimes, right? I just want to tell an honest story about people doing what they love.
It might be a little while before you see the first installments on this, but I will be posting updates as things happen. It looks like I might go on an investigation as early as next weekend. I have to give Robert a big shout out for being so on board and getting back to me. He basically got a random email out of the blue talking about someone writing a comic on what he does. I am pretty excited about this project and love that it will be a laid back thing I can work on when I get a chance. That, and I get to go look for ghosts!

Pootin’ Tootin’ Rasputin.

It’s been awhile since I did a random middle of the night post. So here ye be, land lubbers!
Yesterday I attempted to take a day to just chill. Maybe play some video games, listen to some music and what not. By the end of the night I was back at the drawing table. It’s hard to stop sometimes. Though, last night was taking a break from drawing with, yep, more drawing. Just drawing for the heck of it. It was great.
I started watching the Biography Channels show on Rasputin “the mad monk” on Netflix. I was almost immediately at my drawing table.

Pootin’ Tootin’ Rasputin:

I love that this guy has been taken as one of the most vile, evil, mystical guys to ever exist. But what it comes down to is he was an ass hole that stared you down, was a sexual deviant and was insanely hard to kill. Don’t get me wrong, I love this guy, he was a freak. He did some crazy stuff, but the character of Rasputin is way cooler than Rasputin himself. That’s saying a lot because that guy was pretty freaking interesting! I mean, what did they do, poisoned him, clubbed him and beat him, threw him off a bridge into freezing water and the guy was STILL found alive!? Crazy. He certainly earned his legend in the end.
Anyway, it was late, I had a few beers and sketched this out while I was watching it.
I just started Jeepers-Creepers and am thinking I am getting the urge so, who knows…

Alphabeasts- V is for Void Walker

This weeks Alphabeast is another brought to you by World of Warcraft. I always liked the design of these guys and have thought about doing a drawing of one for awhile.

V is for Void Walker:

Void Walkers are one of the minions of the Warlock character class in World of Warcraft.

I had a pretty busy weekend. I did this at the tail end of finishing up a 12 drawing project that will be featured at Deniath.com in the coming week or two. That project had me doing robot versions of popular comic book characters and I was doing them in full color. So when I came to the end of that and went straight into my Void Walker, I found it hard to shift gear out of the full color thing and back into the gray wash and one spot color theme I have ended up setting for myself with Alphabeasts.
Either way, for being the last drawing in a long two days, I’m happy enough with it.

I will post something more here when the Deniath thing is about to go up. All of those drawings will be for sale through them and pretty cheap actually.
For now, I think I am taking a much deserved day off… but probably not…

Tyrannosaurus Rex with shoulder mounted Great White sharks (that shoot lasers)

Last night was our weekly #FridayDrinkAndDraw on twitter. We went with the theme of Dinosaurs. It was kind of a lean week, people had plans, distractions or, in my case, were just exhausted.
Now I like dinosaurs, so I wasn’t going to NOT do something. Then I remembered a thing I joked about years ago, and just never drew and eventually forgot about.

Tyrannosaurus Rex with shoulder mounted Great White sharks (that shoot lasers):

I rather enjoyed doing this and want to rework it and do it again a little cleaner. I also worked with a larger brush than normal. I generally use a 0 and I used a 2 on this drawing. I kind of liked it, even though it made for some iffy lines here and there (also, it was #FridayDrinkAndDraw, so that may have had more to do with the iffy-ness of some lines…).
I’m actually thinking of reworking it some and making it my next print.

I haven’t been posting lot’s lately because I’ve been busy. I have a couple really cool things to tell everybody about real soon though!

I want to close out with a nod to Jean “Moebius” Giraud. A consistent source of inspiration and an amazing, unique and just giant of an illustrator. Even if you never read a comic book, never looked at the magazine Heavy Metal, or just couldn’t give a shit about art in general. You still most likely enjoyed his work on a number of movies that owe a lot to him for their look and feel. He passed away this weekend and while it is a bummer, he left behind a long wonderful life of work with lives all their own. He will continue to be a major source of inspiration and wonder for lifetimes to come.

Alphabeasts- U is for Ugnaught!

Ahh… another week of procrastinating on making a decision for this weeks Alphabeasts. Between that and just being busy drawing other stuff, I didn’t make a decision and draw it until this morning.
Yep, it’s another Star Wars inspired installment…
U is for Ugnaught:

Went simple too. The Ugnaughts were the little piggy fellas on Cloud City in the Empire Strikes Back. These guys always looked grumpy and pissed to me. I figure there had to be at least one that was just in it for the love. A curious fascination with tinkering. I figure he wanted no part in the melting down and destruction of droids either. Also, I think he is really into dance music.

This one will be added to the Etsy shop later this week, I have a lot to get done this week and need to put off dealing with that for now.
